The site where the plant is located was once an unused gravel pit where the material for the highway near by was taken from.
The excavation works had degraded the site and endangered the integrity of the water-bearing stratum, which was deprived of its natural soil cover and the protection it offered.

The construction of an advanced, both on technical and managerial terms, waste disposal facility provided a vital service for the community, protecting at the same time the local water sources and the health of the local population.
The plant has been operational since 1988, the Barricalla facility has never caused any emergencies, becoming a reference point for environmental protection.
