Safety

For a waste disposal facility, especially one that deals with industrial or dangerous waste, safety is always a top priority.

Barricalla has always been operating at higher safety standards than those legally set, thanks to a cutting-edge planning of the plant (passive safety), a methodical control of the waste to process (active safety) and a constant monitoring of the eventual impacts of the plant's activities on the surrounding environment.

Structural Safety (passive safety)

For a waste disposal facility, especially if it deals with dangerous waste, safety is a top priority. The most important level of reliability of such a plant is based on the construction modality used to build the tanks where the waste is put.

Barricalla has realized a water proofing system, which is extremely reliable, combining both natural and man-made materials chosen for their impermeable characteristics and long-term stability. The building of the tanks involves the use of a 4 meter layer of low permeability clay (k<10-9 m/s), on top of which an HDPE, a particular type of high-density polyethylene sheet is welded at high temperature (k<10-12 m/s) guaranteeing almost total water proofing.

The next step involves the positioning of a second layer of clay, one meter wide, plus another polyethylene sheet. In this structure pipes are placed, which will drain the landfill leachate and the waste on a daily basis. The water proofing is also guaranteed on the walls thanks to a layer of clay and an HDPE sheet.

The structure's integrity is constantly monitored by a dedicated control system with mobile cameras. In case the first sealing system gets damaged and leachate flows through the first control system, the second control system would still be in place, which is also safer than the first one, protecting the soil beneath and allowing Barricalla enough time to intervene and secure the damaged areas.

Operational Safety (active safety).

The way a waste disposal facility is run is as important as the way it is built.

Daily attention and constant work by Barricalla employees, through the respect of high standards of safety and the voluntary participation to the EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) system, guarantees high levels of safety.

The EMAS system requires that the participating body defines an environmental policy that takes into account the impact of the plant's activities and conducts a yearly monitoring and evaluation process to assess its performance. It also requires the results of this performance analysis to be shared with all interested parties, by publishing them on a specific Environmental Declaration.

This is a very important instrument that involves the whole firm at all levels to contribute to constant improvements.
